Technical Abstract: Viral pathogens that cause disease in mosquitoes belong to three major groups: baculoviruses (DBVs) (Baculoviridae: Deltabaculovirus); iridoviruses (MIVs) (Iridoviridae: Chloriridovirus); and cytoplasmic polyhedrosis viruses (CPVs) (Reoviridae: Cypovirus). Baculoviruses and iridoviruses are DNA viruses while cypoviruses are RNA viruses in mosquitoes. Recently, there have been tremendous advances in the ability to transmit some groups of mosquito pathogenic viruses as well as new genomic information that can be employed to understand and manipulate these viruses at the molecular level (Becnel and White, 2007). This review will examine the current status and recent advancements in understanding the biology and molecular features of the two most important mosquito DNA viruses (baculoviruses and iridescent viruses) and investigations to design molecular probes to enhance isolation and identification of additional species to broaden our knowledge of mosquito pathogenic viruses.
