Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Production of food is complex and ensuring the safety of food for human consumption provides serious challenges. The global population in 2010 was estimated at 6 billion people requiring production of more than 200 billion food animals for consumption. The challenges thus far have been met, in large part, by adoption of intensive production systems, often controlled as an integrated system from the rearing through processing for retail. However, population growth is expected to reach or exceed 10 billion people by 2050. With deforestation increasing, urban sprawl and decreased land mass available for production how will we increase the food supply to meet growing demand? This presentation will explore the challenges facing us, discuss approaches to this challenge and the potential impact on our ability to continue producing the high quality and quantity of safe and affordable food stuffs.
