Interpretive Summary: The imidazolinone herbicides are widely used to manage weeds in leguminous crops, imidazolinone-resistant crops, forestry, aquatics and rights of way. This chapter briefly describes the discovery, selectivity and biological activity of the imidazolinones. The imidazolinones were discovered in the 1970s by American Cyanamid Company. The first commercial herbicides were developed in the 1980s and reached their peak in the 1990s. Currently there are six imidazolinone herbicides registered for use in various crops. These herbicides continue to provide effective weed management for farmers throughout the world.
