Technical Abstract: Cotton (Gossypium spp.) plants, including cottonseed, have small, pigmented glands containing gossypol and other terpenoid compounds that are toxic to humans and non-ruminant animals. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers involved in gland morphogenesis are useful for the discovery of candidate genes associated with gland and gossypol traits. From coding and intron sequences of unique gland development-related protein (GDRP) genes, we developed polymorphic SNP markers and located them in the tetraploid cotton genome. Identification of the gene-tagged SNP markers on cotton chromosomes would facilitate studies on the gland morphogenesis to improve cottonseed quality.
