Interpretive Summary: Infestations by soybean aphid (SBA) can reduce the yield of soybeans, but resistant lines of soybean may be able to reduce infestations and limit yield loss. We tested for resistance to the SBA among several soybean lines, and rated lines as resistant or susceptible in six tests. All plants of Sato (PI 548409, Test E) and Sennari (PI 234540, Test F) showed resistance to SBA, and the proportion of resistant plants in these lines did not differ from that of the resistant check line. These two lines had previously been identified with resistance to SBA. In test B, one plant of soybean line Fukuyutaka (PI 506675) was rated as resistant, but the proportion of resistant plants for this line did not differ from that of the susceptible check line. No other lines screened had plants that were resistant to SBA. These studies provide critical information on the inherent resistance of some soybean lines to SBA. Future studies are needed to characterize the resistance mechanisms and incorporate the resistance into contemporary soybean lines.

Technical Abstract: We tested for resistance to the soybean aphid (SBA, Aphis glycines) among several soybean lines, and rated lines as resistant or susceptible in six tests (A through F). All plants of Sato (PI 548409, Test E) and Sennari (PI 234540, Test F) showed resistance to SBA, and the proportion of resistant plants in these lines did not differ from that of the resistant check. The two lines had previously been identified with resistance to SBA. In test B, one plant of soybean line Fukuyutaka (PI 506675) was rated as resistant, but the proportion of resistant plants in this line did not differ from that of the susceptible check. No other lines screened had plants that were resistant to SBA. Future studies are needed to characterize the resistance mechanisms and incorporate the resistance genes into contemporary soybean lines.
