Technical Abstract: Biomass refers to biological material derived from living or recently living organisms, such as wood, agricultural products and wastes, and alcohol fuels. An increasingly popular R&D approach is to convert biomass into industrial polymers or chemicals. NMR is an excellent technique for the characterization of the starting materials and the resulting products. In this talk, several examples will be given of the use of solution and solid-state NMR to study agricultural materials and wastes, and selected reaction products. As expected, the NMR spectra are complex, but under suitable conditions they can provide useful information about the reactions involved and the reaction mechanisms.
