Technical Abstract: Dispersal behavior of fruit flies is appetitive. Measures of dispersion involve two different parameter: the maximum distance and the standard distance. Standard distance is a parameter that describes the probalility of dispersion and is mathematically equivalent to the standard deviation around the mean. The calculated standard distance for Anastrepha ludens is 236 meters and for Ceratitis capitata is 240 meters. However, there is a reported recapture of a marked individual of Anastrepha ludens at a distance of 37 km from the point of release. Such maximum distances are likely possible only with the assistance of winds.
