Technical Abstract: The Illumina BovineSNP50 DNA chip has substantially changed the genetic and genomic research program at USMARC. It has enhanced our commitment to produce genetic tools that can be exported to beef cattle producers to further their selection goals in hard-to-measure traits such as feed efficiency, cow longevity, and disease resistance. There are however, several challenges we must overcome to fully utilize the data generated from these chips. Efforts such as the 2,000 bull project, fine mapping efforts for specific traits, and the USMARC Germplasm Evaluation Program will allow us to fully utilize our resources for exporting these valuable tools to the industry.
