Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Soybean seed oil composition and content are important agronomic traits, and are also determining factors for soybean oil nutritional values and its use in biodiesel production and other industrial applications. Production of seed storage oil requires concerted activity of many genes and biological pathways over the course of seed maturation. To illustrate the underlying gene regulatory networks that control storage oil production and their interplay with the other traits, we examined the transcriptomes and sequenced small RNA libraries in soybean cotyledons over the course of seed maturation using Affymetrix GeneChip and Solexa sequencing-by-synthesis technology. In addition, we determined the profiles of storage lipids in the tissues. A variety of bioinformatic algorithms and strategies are used to delineate a number of transcriptional regulatory networks, and identify a number of miRNA species as potential master key regulators for soybean seed maturation. Further characterization of the gene regulatory networks and miRNA species, and its application in agricultural biotechnology will be discussed.
