Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Agricultural polymers were composed of extra-cellular polysaccharides secreted by Leuconostoc mesenteroides have been shown to inhibit corrosion on corrosion-sensitive metals. The substantially pure exopolysaccharide has a general structure consisting of alpha(1-6)-linked D-glucose backbone and approximately 3-4% branching of alpha(1-3)linkages. Corrosion behavior was determined to be strain-dependent. Pore resistance and corrosion rate were calculated from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and polarization studies. The corrosion rate was at least 50% lower and the pore resistance was twice as high than control samples, indicating good inhibitory processes. Nano-scale aqueous coatings were examined using AFM and QCM and showed self-repair properties. This material may be useful in anti-corrosive coating applications.
