Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: For many years, the Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC) has demonstrated that acoustic emission (AE) is a powerful tool for characterizing the properties of biobased materials with fibrous and composite structure. AE often reveals structural information of a material that other methods cannot offer. This report gives a brief account on the AE research carried out in ERRC for the characterizations of biobased materials. AE has been applied in the studies of leather tear resistance, tensile strength, the degree of opening-up of the fibrous structure, degree of lubrication of fiber network, and flexibility of finishing coatings. More recently, our AE methods have been adopted successfully by other research groups for characterizing the fracture mechanisms of various green composites. The results have proved very helpful for identifying the optimum composition of green composites. Recently, we also used another acoustic method and demonstrated that Airborne Ultrasonic (AU) testing without direct contact with samples offers a great potential method for the nondestructive evaluation of the material properties of leather.
