Technical Abstract: Soybean genetics is a broad area encompassing all aspects, such as qualitative genetics, molecular genetics, etc. The objective of this book chapter was to include information that could be used for soybean improvement, and to summarize the current status of soybean genomics. Soybean germplasm is the foundation for cultivar improvement. Germplasm is restricted to the genus Glycine using conventional genetics but can be expanded beyond plants by use of molecular techniques. Germplasm also includes naturally occurring variants and induced changes. Tables are given that list qualitative genetic gene symbols, with corresponding phenotypes, and the relevant references. The tables are very useful because they are arranged by subject matter, e.g., pest reaction, root response, etc. Within each subject, sub-headings are given, e.g., brown stem rot, soybean mosaic virus, etc. Then the gene symbol with the appropriate reference is given. The text highlights the older literature and brings the reader up-to-date on current and emerging issues in molecular genetics and genomics. This chapter contains useful information for experienced soybean scientists and should be a standard reference for scientists new to soybean genetics.
