Technical Abstract: The NC-1037 project addresses “Genetic and functional genomic approaches to improve production and quality of pork.” It has 2 objectives: 1) Further understand the dynamic genetic mechanisms that influence production efficiency and quality of pork; and 2) Discover genetic mechanisms controlling animal health in pork production. All work at BARC was aimed at Obj.2 including 1) Update the nomenclature for the swine leukocyte antigen (SLA) complex. Optimize methods for identifying SLA class I and II alleles; 2) Validate the utility of the new Pigoligoarray and use it to assess swine responses to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) infection; 3) Expand PRRS Host Genomic Consortium (PHGC) studies; and 4) Identification and mapping of differentially expressed genes regulating responses to Salmonella infection.
