Technical Abstract: Novel value-added uses of glycerol derivatives are indispensable due to increased biodiesel production. In this connection, the physical properties of ULSD were improved by adding glycerol oleate mixture (GOM) at increasing concentrations of 0.01 to 5 wt%. The effect of adding GOM was determined by evaluating the acid value, cloud point, pour point, cold filter plugging point, kinematic viscosity, and lubricity of the blends, with increasing concentrations of GOM. The results showed improved lubricity for ULSD blended with GOM (493 to 90 um in the HFRR lubricity test) and pour point of ULSD blended with GOM enhanced from -250 deg C to -360 deg C at 0-1% GOM. The acid value, cloud point and cold filter plugging point were basically unaffected by adding GOM. Up to 1 wt% blend of GOM with ULSD meets the petrodiesel standard ASTM D975. In summary, GOM appears to be a valuable bio-based lubricity and pour point improving blend component for ULSD fuels.
