Technical Abstract: Currently, there are two types of male sterility mainly commercialized in hybrid rice production, three-line type or cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) and two-line type or environmental male sterility (EMS). The great majority belongs to the CMS and there are four strategies that have been proven successful in breeding hybrid rice in China started in 1960s. Most of commercial restoring lines either are cultivars bred by IRRI or are derived from IRRI cultivars. The USDA rice world collection holds about 20,000 accessions from 116 countries, including those used in Chinese hybrid rice. Using Chinese experience on hybrid rice, we designed a breeding strategy to use this collection and create male sterile germplasm for development of hybrid rice in the U.S. A total of 156 accessions including 19 accessions of wild rice species were sampled from the collection and 237 crosses were made among these accessions. Numerous male sterile materials have been identified from these crosses and test-crosses were conducted toward development of either male sterile lines or restoring lines.
