Technical Abstract: The tonoplast intrinsic proteins (TIP) are one of the five aquaporin protein subfamilies. Aquaporin proteins are known to facilitate water transport through biological membranes. In order to identify TIP aquaporin gene candidates in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), in silico and molecular cloning efforts and subsequent sequence analyses were performed. We report the submission of 20 cotton TIP subfamily genes to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Twelve genes belonged to a TIP1 subgroup and eight genes to other TIP subgroups (TIP2, TIP4, and TIP5). These data help to understand structural and functional characteristics of TIP genes in cotton.
