Interpretive Summary: Stink bugs are pests in cotton following successful eradication efforts for the boll weevil. The brown stink bug complex is comprised of several species in the genus Euschistus. Because of similarities in color and reported tolerance to several classes of insecticides by some species, it is critical to accurately identify which species occur in cotton. This study was undertaken to identify Euschistus species in Central Texas. Six Euschistus species were identified, including: E. quadrator Rolston, E. Tristigmus (Say), E. obscures (Palisot), E. Crassus Dallas, E. ictericus L., and E. servus (Say). Images of these six species and pertinent distinguishing characters are provided and discussed. This report can be used to accurately identify Euschistus species and assist in determining correct insect control products.
Technical Abstract: Stink bugs have become pests in cotton following successful eradication efforts for the boll weevil. Species of the genus Euschistus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) are common in cotton and other commodities, and species within the genus are commonly grouped as the brown stink bug complex. This generic designation, however, precludes accurate identification of individual Euschistus species in row crops. This study was conducted to identify and provide accurate visual identification of Euschistus spp. in Central Texas. Six Euschistus spp. were identified, including: E. quadrator Rolston, E. Tristigmus (Say), E. obscures (Palisot), E. Crassus Dallas, E. ictericus L., and E. servus (Say). Images and key characters for accurately and rapidly identifying the species are discussed. With recent reports of some Euschistus spp. being less susceptible to insecticides, this report can be used to accurately identify Euschistus spp. and assist in determining correct insect control products for these insects that historically infest row, forage, fruit, and nut crops.
