Technical Abstract: CottonDB (http://cottondb.org/) is a database and web resource for cotton genomic and genetic research. Created in 1995, CottonDB was among the first plant genome databases established by the USDA-ARS. Accessed through a website interface, the database aims to be a convenient, inclusive medium of information exchange for all major categories of research related to the genomics, genetics, and crop improvement of cotton. Beginning in 2006, the database has been migrating to a new home (http://cottondb.org) which contains several commonly used visualization tools for genome research such as CMap, GBrowse, Web FPC Server, and Web BLAST Server. Current major data contained in the database include over 459,000 gene, EST, and contig sequences; 14,000 primers and probes; 10,000 germplasm accessions; 4,600 published research articles; and 40 genetic maps with over 22,000 mapped loci. Future activities will continuously collect consolidate, and integrate data generated from ongoing genetic and genomic research efforts and make these data available to the international cotton scientific community.
