Membrane-Active Properties and Antiradical Activity of Gossypol and Its Derivatives. Chemistry of Natural Compounds. 44(4):440-445.

Interpretive Summary: Gossypol is known to have considerable biological activity, including antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-protozoan, and anti-viral effects. In this work, we report on the antioxidant activity of gossypol and relative derivatives and have studied how these compounds interact with artificial bi-lipid membranes. The work will be of interest to researchers studying gossypol anti-cancer activity and how gossypol is transported between cells.

Technical Abstract: New asymmetrical derivatives of gossypol were synthesized. The antioxidant activity of gossypol and these derivatives was studied. The interaction of these compounds with modeled lipid membranes was also studied. It was found that the antioxidant effects and ability to interact with membranes was dependent on the specific gossypol derivatives formed. The work indicates that gossypol and its derivatives can intercalate within bi-lipid membranes where they may affect transport function and membrane activity.
