Interpretive Summary: The mission of the Application and Production Technology Research Unit is to develop new and improved methods of applying agrochemicals, and to develop and integrate pesticide application, crop production equipment, and cultural and agronomic practices into profitable crop production systems. A summary of research activities for the Unit are highlighted to include aerial application, irrigation scheduling, spatial variability mapping, soil properties sensing and yield mapping, thermal imaging for detection of pending crop stress, variable-rate aerial application, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for mosquito control, crop spraying, and remote sensing.

Technical Abstract: Research at the USDA ARS APTRU, Stoneville, MS promotes profitable production systems in keeping with environmental stewardship. Research areas summarized include aerial application, irrigation scheduling, spatial variability mapping, soil properties sensing and yield mapping, thermal imaging for detection of pending crop stress, variable-rate aerial application, and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for mosquito control, crop spraying and remote sensing.
