Technical Abstract: Soybean is the most important oil crop in the United States. Production of soybean seed oil requires coordinated expression of many biological components and pathways, which is further regulated by seed development and phyto-hormones. A new research project is initiated in my laboratory to delineate the biological network underlying oil composition and content in seeds for soybean quality and nutrition value improvement. As the first step, the project will model a co-regulatory network based on public available transcriptomic data, and examine transcriptomes, and phyto-hormone and lipid profiles of soybean seeds at eight developmental stages. Oil metabolic pathways and the profiling data will be integrated with the co-regulatory network to delineate the networks related to oil composition and content in soybean seeds. The regulatory functions of various phyto-hormones and seed development in the networks will be predicted. A number of genes regulating oil composition and content in the networks will be selected to validate their functions through molecular and genetic approaches. The progress and preliminary data of the project will be presented and discussed.
