Technical Abstract: Grazing dairy cows expend more energy than confined dairy cows due to grazing activity as well as walking between the pasture and the milking parlor twice a day. The amount of energy expended depends on a variety of factors, including weather, slope, and distance. This summary article was developed by request for the Organic Agriculture section of www.eXtension.org as a tool to determine the additional energy requirements of grazing dairy cows under a variety of environmental conditions.
