Technical Abstract: This chapter of the new barley monograph summarizes current applications of molecular genetics and transformation to barley improvement. The chapter describes recent applications of molecular markers including association genetics, QTL mapping and marker assisted selection in barley programs, and includes a survey of breeding programs around the world on their use of marker assisted selection in barley improvement. Also included is a summary of barley transformation technology improvements in recent years. Applications of transformation for improved disease resistance and malting quality parameters are described. Finally, future prospects of molecular technologies and transformation are discussed, including current limitations to use of marker assisted selection for improvement of complex traits and the potential of whole genome profiles to identify discrete genome regions necessary for high quality commercial barley cultivars.
