Technical Abstract: Live bird markets in the Northeast U.S. have been a source of low pathogenic avian influenza isolates ever since surveillance began in the 80s. The most persitent lineage (H7N2) was successfully eradicated in 2006, but since then a small but increasing number of H5N2 viruses have been isolated from the markets. Whole genome sequence analysis of over 30 H5 avian influenza isolates was conducted to evaluate if these viruses were from a single or multiple introductions. Evidence of multiple introductions was observed, but one lineage appears to be persistent and poses a risk of spread to the integrated poultry industry.
