Technical Abstract: There is no standard definition of fast food. Generally, fast food is eaten without cutlery, and fast-food restaurants have no wait staff. Failure to have a standardized definition makes it difficult to compare studies. Foods available outside the home tend to be high in energy and fat compared with foods eaten at home, and fast-food restaurant meals have different quantities of fat and calories than do meals from full-service restaurants. The growth of the fast-food industry in this country has been phenomenal. The chapter attempts to provide the latest information on fast foods, organic foods, and fad diets. The reader is provided with additional resources, including references to printed materials, agencies, and websites.
