Technical Abstract: While host seeking, hematophagous insects may encounter sublethal doses of neurotoxic compounds from treated substrates or ultra low volume insecticide sprays. This insecticide exposure may disrupt neurological pathways potentially harming sense organs used for host-seeking behavior. Therefore sub-lethal exposure to insecticides may account for additional negative impact on the treated population. Female Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus were exposed to several doses of pyrethroid treatments and behavioral and electrophysiological responses to individual host odors subsequently evaluated. Significant behavioral changes are discussed in the context of population control and disease transmission.
