Technical Abstract: Vaccination of domestic ducks against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has been done in Asia with mixed results. One of the observations from the field is that Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) respond differently to vaccination than other common domestic ducks (Anas sp.). The objective of this study was to compare response to avian influenza (AI) vaccination between Muscovy and Pekin ducks. Clear differences in antibody titers, morbidity, mortality, and duration of viral shedding were observed between these two duck species, with Muscovy ducks showing less protection after vaccination. This information should be taken into account when implementing vaccine strategies for control of HPAI in different bird species.
