Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The analytically-based Dietary Supplement Ingredient Database-Release One (DSID-1) was recently released to the scientific community and made publicly available through a web site hosted by the National Library of Medicine. Complete information on nutrient intake from both foods and dietary supplements is necessary for evaluating associations between diet and health. The USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory and the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements have collaborated to develop the DSID-1. DSID-1 features a multivitamin/mineral (MVM) nutrient calculator, nutrient data files, and related documentation. The interactive calculator provides estimates and measures of variability for 18 nutrients in adult MVMs when users enter nutrient levels from MVM labels into the software program. Estimates provided by the calculator are based upon data from a nationwide study of representative adult MVMs (defined as 3 or more vitamins), conducted by ARS/USDA. In this study, 35 commonly reported adult MVMs and 75 products representing the lower market share were purchased in six geographic locations from various market channels and analyzed at qualified laboratories. Mean percent differences from label were calculated for each nutrient and compared to labeled levels using regression analysis. Predicted values and standard errors of the mean (SEM) were calculated to include variation among lots within products as well as variation among products at each labeled level. The predicted mean % difference from label for the most common adult MVM level ranged from 0 to 10% above label for 11 of the 18 nutrients (iron, niacin, magnesium, zinc, vitamin E, manganese, potassium, copper, phosphorus, vitamin C, and vitamin B-12). The predicted mean % difference was between 10 and 20% above label for four nutrients (riboflavin, folic acid, calcium, and thiamin). For three nutrients (vitamin B-6, selenium, and iodine), the predicted mean % difference was greater than 20% above label. DSID-1 facilitates assessment of vitamin and mineral intakes from adult MVMs as a complement to the nutrient database for foods, the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. Using the calculator and/or data files, users can obtain analytically-derived data estimates for nutrients in generic forms of adult MVMs, create and store electronic files, and combine the information with food data for total nutrient intake estimates.
