Interpretive Summary: Catfish farming is hindered by high mortality rates. At a time when the catfish industry is struggling to survive against low-cost imports and the rapid, steady increase in production costs (fuel and food), improving catfish survival rate is key to reducing production cost. The Toll Like Receptors (TLRs) are key elements of the innate response to pathogens. They recognize pathogens and activate the host defense responses. The development of markers associated with the TLR will provide a tool to evaluate their involvement in disease resistance and genetic improvement of broodstock.

Technical Abstract: The Toll Like Receptors (TLRs) are key elements of the innate response to pathogens. They recognize Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) and activate the host defense responses. As such, they are candidate genes for disease resistance. In teleost, eight homologs of the endothermic vertebrate TLRs have been identified as well as six homologs of the ectothermic vertebrate TLRs. In channel catfish, all of the teleost TLRs, except TLR23, have been identified. In this paper we report their mapping which will be used for QTL mapping of disease resistance.
