Technical Abstract: The Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (AGFD)of the American Chemical Society was 100 years old in 2008. ACS grouped papers into sections at its national meetings starting in 1904, including one dealing with agricultural, biological, and sanitary chemistry. This section became AGFD on December 30, 1908 and grew over the next fifteen years, featuring papers given by eminent people in the field. After interest dwindled in the mid-1920s, the Division was revitalized. Subdivisions were formed starting in 1946, and two of these later became full ACS Divisions. Today, with an award program, a web site, and over 400 talks and posters delivered at national meetings annually, many of which are published in ACS Symposium Series Books and the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, AGFD is ready to lead the field of agricultural and food chemistry over the next 100 years.
