An Engineering Center: Selecting seed mixtures for actively used military lands. Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory, Hanover, New Hampshire. Interpretive Summary: These guidelines were prepared to help military land managers to select appropriate seed mixture for revegetating an array of lands disturbed by military training in the Intermountain West of the United States. Recommending appropriate seed mixtures can be difficult based on the different geographic sites, rainfall, and soils. This guide will walk military land managers through a series of questions allowing them to identify several revegetation options given their conditions. Descriptions of the species are found at the end of this planting guide.
Technical Abstract: This guide provides recommendations on plant materials for Department of Defense (DoD) land restoration at military facilties in the Intermountain West of the United States. These guidelines provide military land managers new options for revegetating military training lands. Most other guides for land restoration are for lands with little traffic and are usually related to either grazing or conservation lands; they are based primarily on plant establishment while maximizing yields. On military lands, the degree and cause of disturbance can vary, but in general, vegetation needs to establish as quickly as possible and be more resilient to military training activities and disturbance. Some of the unique military land restoration goals are listed in the Seed Mixture Section of this guide.
