Technical Abstract: Life cycle analysis, a method used to quantify the energy and environmental flows of a process or product on the environment, is increasingly utilized by food processors to develop strategies to lessen the carbon footprint of their operations. In the case of the milk supply chain, the method requires accurate data input from the dairy farm to the processing plant to the consumer. In this study, we show that process simulation tools, routinely used by chemical engineers, are useful for modeling a fluid milk plant, providing a framework for calculating energy and water usage in sensitivity studies to improve efficiency.
