Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Advanced high-throughput screening has resulted in the discovery of several yeast strains that are capable of anaerobically utilizing pentose, as well as hexose sugars. The growth and ethanol production of these developed strains will be described. The paradigm for using genetically engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains in lignocellulosic ethanol production will also be discussed.
