Technical Abstract: The application of wastewaters to land for treatment and disposal or “land farms” was one of the oldest forms of wastewater treatment technology. Land application systems have included application to edible and non-edible crops, to rangelands, to forests and wood plantations, to recreational areas including parks and golf courses, and to abandoned mineral excavation sites. In the U.S., the land application of wastewaters, whether it is municipal wastewater or wastewater from agricultural and food processing is highly regulated and sometimes controversial. The debate of the effectiveness of land application of wastewaters in terms of economy and ecology continues to this day. This presentation provides an up-to-date survey of land application of food processing wastewaters in agricultural and non-agricultural settings in the United States. In addition to current technologies and practices of land application of wastewaters in the U.S., the environmental impact of land application of food wastewater will also be discussed with emphasis on human health. Issues, i.e., air quality, water runoff from land farm sites, and human exposure to wastewater or its related products (such as sludge) will be addressed. A patented starch/oil based dispersant (Fantesk™) for bioremediation of contaminated soil, which is developed at CPF Unit of USA National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research in Peoria, IL, USA, will also be introduced.
