Interpretive Summary: Proteomics is a new technology that holds significant promise for advancing animal science research. This article reviews the current state of proteomic research and its unparalleled capacity to identify and quantitate thousands of proteins. Basic principles of experimental design are outlined for proteomic experiments. Current challenges and limitations unique to animal science are described. Finally, the potential of this technology is discussed as a tool important to animal research.

Technical Abstract: Proteomics holds significant promise as a method for advancing animal science research. The use of this technology in animal science is still in its infancy. The ability of proteomics to simultaneously identify and quantify potentially thousands of proteins is unparalleled. In this review, we will discuss the current state of proteomic technology and cover basic principles of its experimental design. In addition, challenges and limitations of proteomics will be considered, stressing those that are unique to animal sciences. The current proteomic research in animal science will be discussed and the potential uses for this technology will be highlighted.
