Technical Abstract: Virus-induced neoplastic diseases of chickens are caused by either a retrovirus (leukosis/sarcoma and reticuloendotheliosis), or by herpesvirus, Marek’s disease (MD). The leukosis/sarcoma (L/S) viruses are avian retroviruses that infect chickens and can cause a wide variety of tumors including lymphoid leukosis, the most common form of leukosis that arises from infection with an avian leukosis virus (ALV). Reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) is another avian retrovirus unrelated to L/S group pf viruses and can infect chickens, turkeys and many other avian species. On the other hand, MD, an economically important lymphoproliferative disease of primarily chickens, is caused by an alphaherpesvirus termed MD virus (MDV). This presentation is primarily focused on MD and includes discussion of: a) current strategies for prevention and control of MD; b) differential diagnosis from other viral lymphomas such as those induced by ALV or REV.
