Technical Abstract: One of the most promising opportunities to improve the genetic diversity of Upland cotton is from interspecific germplasm introgression from the other tetraploid species. The untapped potential of the beneficial alleles of the wild unadapted species has not been well utilized because of the paucity of information of the beneficial alleles in the other species. In addition to the biological and technical challenges associated with the interspecific crosses, the value of the wild unadapted species is not very well appreciated because the effect of useful alleles are normally masked by the effect of deletorious alleles in the wild unadapted genotypes. We have detected for the first time the presence of cryptic beneficial alleles in G. barbadense (3-79) with potential to increase lint and seedcotton yield in Upland cotton (TM-1) utilizing an innovative method of intercrossing backcross chromosome substitution lines (CS-B). The detail results will be presented in the conference.
