Technical Abstract: Orange rust of sugarcane was observed approximately 5 miles east of Belle Glade, Florida on CP 80-1743 (a complex hybrid of Sacharum L. species) during the lsat week of June 2007. Orange rust pustules are cinnamon-orange in color, oval and smaller than the darker brown elongate rust pustules of the brown rust pathogen. The diagnosis was confirmed to be Puccinia kuehnii by spore size and morphology and by molecular sequences to that in the GenBank. Orange rust appears to be favored by warmer temperatures than that of the brown rust pathogen, P. melanocephala. This is the first confirmed observation of orange rust caused by P. Kuehnii in the Western Hemisphere.
