Technical Abstract: This volume, edited by the five authors above, is based on contributed papers presented at a combined conference of the VI International Solanaceae Conference, the 90th Annual Meeting of the Potato Association of America, and the III Solanaceae Genomics Conference. The meeting was held in Madison Wisconsin at the Monona Terrace Convention Center from July 23-27, 2006. The unifying theme of these three groups was the science of the Solanaceae. The theme of the Conference Solanaceae: Genomics Meets Biodiversity, describes the goal of integrating all phases of Solanaceae science with the emerging field of genomics. This goal has been fostered by the parallel DNA sequencing efforts of both the tomato and potato genomes. The conference consisted of an opening half-day plenary session, five additional half-day invited talk sessions, meetings of the six sections of the Potato Association of America, and ten half-day satellite sessions on the following topics: Application of FISH in Support of Sequencing Plant Genomes, Bioinformatics, Coffee Genomics, Pepper, Potato Genomics, Secondary Metabolism, Solanum Taxonomy, Tobacco, Tomato Sequencing, and Translational Genomics. In total, there were 416 talks and posters presented by 539 registrants from 40 countries, listed by increasing order of attendees: Austria, Belgium, Chile, China, Denmark, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Jordan, Palestine, Poland, Ireland, Romania, Taiwan, Turkey, Venezuela, Guatemala, India, Kenya, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Russia, Switzerland, New Zealand, Spain, Australia, Colombia, Argentina, Scotland, Israel, Brazil, France, Japan, Peru, Germany, Republic of Korea, England, Italy, Canada, The Netherlands, and the USA. This volume contains 42 papers in the diverse fields of Databases, Diversity and Distributions, Ethnobotany, Evolution and Phylogeny, Genetic Resources and Genebanks, Germplasm Characterization and Breeding, Meeting Summaries, Molecular Biology and Genomics, Taxonomy and Biosystematics, and two obituaries of prominent Solanaceae taxonomists who had passed away since the Nijmegen Conference.
