Interpretive Summary: Selected samples from the US peanut germplasm collection designated as the mini core or the "Core of the Core" were analyzed for their amino acid, folic acid, fatty acid and tocopherol content. The limiting essential amino acids, Lysine, Methionine and Threonine were found to vary by about 50% with means closed to a standard reference peanut paste. Folate was found to be more than double in the samples with highest levels than those of the lowest levels. The ratio of the the oleic acid to the linoleic acid in the oil did not give a very wide range. Some samples had higher levels of alpha tocopherol than gamma tocopherol which is different from the norm for peanuts. These results show that the varieties that make of the Core of the Core may have potential for increasing peanut nutritional profiles if used in conventional breeding programs.

Technical Abstract: Samples from the Core Collection designated as the Core of the Core Collection were analyzed from the 2005 crop year. Samples were analyzed for individual amino acids, folic acid and total oil content. Oil mechanically expressed from the seed was analyzed for individual tocopherols and fatty acids.
