Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Results from 5 years of greenhouse gas measurements at an irrigated cropping systems site near Fort Collins, Colorado will be presented. In additions, data from the literature will be used to support our observations on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from these irrigated cropping systems. Observations from our work that will be discussed are as follows: 1) increased N2O emissions from N fertilization (UAN or Urea) occurs during the first 30-40 days following fertilization, with N2O fluxes declining to near background levels thereafter; 2) there is no residual effects of N fertilization on N2O emissions late in the growing season or during the non-crop period; 3) total growing season N2O emissions vary with year, but are proportional to the amount of N applied; 4) tillage system does not appear to have much affect on N2O emissions, but inclusion of soybean or dry bean in the rotation increases N2O emissions; and 5) a polymer-coated urea (ESN®) shows potential for reducing N2O emissions in irrigated systems, but more research is needed to verify this observation.
