Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Field studies were conducted across the cotton production region of Georgia in 2004, 2005, and 2006 to assess the efficacy of a new seed treatment for the control of plant parasitic nematodes on cotton. AVICTA Complete Pak, which includes the nematicide abamectin, is currently being used by cotton growers in Georgia to reduce the impact of southern root-knot (Meloidogyne incognita), reniform (Rotylenchlus reniformis), and Columbia lance (Hoplolaimus columbus) nematodes to their crop. During this study, multiple trials were conducted both in small plots located at research stations and large, on-farm studies located in commercial cotton fields. The efficacy of AVICTA Complete Pak was typically compared to that of aldicarb (Temik 15G), and also to seed treated with only an insecticide (either Cruiser or Gaucho). The fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (Telone II) was also evaluated in some trials. Most sites included in this study were naturally infested with southern root-knot nematode, though sites infested with Columbia lance and reniform nematodes were also assessed. We could not show a statistical difference in many fields between the effect of AVICTA Complete Pak and Temik 15G (at 5.0 lb/A) based on lint yields. AVICTA Complete Pak was also statistically similar to Cruiser seed treatment and Gaucho seed treatment in many fields, though neither of these seed treatments has efficacy against plant parasitic nematodes. Early season root galling from the southern root-knot nematode was reduced in plots treated with Temik 15G compared to AVICTA Complete Pak, and neither plots treated with AVICTA Complete Pak nor Temik 15G (5 lb/A) had yields equal to those treated with Telone II when nematode populations were high.
