Technical Abstract: Natural products from Pacific Northwest forest resources can offer alternatives to the use of synthetic pesticides in the control of both arthropods of public health concern and forest fungal pathogens. Tree heartwood extracts with high toxicity (low LC50) in preliminary brine shrimp bioassays were found to be good sources for these bioactive compounds. Comparisons are made for the activities of isolated compounds, extracts, and woody materials from Alaska yellow, incense, Port-Orford, and western red cedars and western juniper against mosquitoes, ticks, and the fungus responsible for sudden oak death.
