Interpretive Summary: New repellents against biting insects need to be developed to protect people from insect-transmitted diseases. We found a chemical produced by a wild ox that deters biting insects. We have made structurally-similar chemicals in our laboratory and tested their ability to repel mosquitoes. This information will be used by scientists and industrial chemists to design new repellents to protect humans from biting insects.

Technical Abstract: 5-(1-hydroxynonyl)-2-tetrahydrofuranpentanoic acid (18-Bovidic acid), a compound recently identified as a mosquito deterrent from the hair of gaur, has been evaluated for its efficacy compared to known synthetic repellents. In the present study we have evaluated analogs of Bovidic acid, related hydroxyfuranoid acid and their esters to identify structural features and stereochemistry necessary to exhibit feeding deterrent activities against arthropod vectors.
