Technical Abstract:
This report describes the results of a Fusarium keratitis outbreak investigation being conducted by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The epidemiological data indicate that the 2005-2006 outbreaks of corneal infections within the United States are linked to the use of one brand of contact lens solution. This determination was made by conducting a stringent test of product association, comparing case-patients and uninfected individuals. The controlled investigation indicates that use of Bausch & Lomb’s ReNu® with MoistureLoc, for reasons that remain unclear, increases the risk for Fusarium keratitis. Eye-care physicians are urged to be vigilant in the diagnosis and treatment of fungal keratitis.
