Interpretive Summary: The Xylella fastidiosa is a xylem-limited bacterium which causes several economically important diseases in agronomic, horticultural and landscape plants. This paper reviews the current status of PCR-based pathogen detection, genetic characterization and a genome level analysis of strain differentiation of Xylella fastidiosa,. The use of genomics data for strain comparisons will help better understanding the pathogenicity of the pathogen. The genome-level analysis can also be applied to design new strategies for management and control of Xylella fastidiosa associated diseases in a wide range of crops.

Technical Abstract: The xylem limited plant pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa causes economically important diseases in agronomic, horticultural and landscape plants. This review includes the current status of PCR based systems for detection and characterization of Xylella fastidiosa, and presents a genome level analysis of strain differentiation. The use of the genomics data for strain comparisons will facilitate identification of pathogenicity and virulence determinants. The genome-level analysis can be applied to design new strategies for management and control of Xylella fastidiosa associated diseases in a wide range of crops.
