Technical Abstract:
A vegetable oil was used as diesel fuel for the first time in 1900 and the first biodiesel dates from the 1930's. Significant insights into fuel properties were already gained in those times. This article briefly discusses such results and relates the author's own recent work on biodiesel fuel properties to them. Fuel properties that are discussed include cetane number and exhaust emissions, viscosity, application to cold flow, oxidative stability and lubricity.
