Interpretive Summary: Research performed by two of the three CRIS projects involved with germplasm, genetic enhancement, and breeding is described. The major emphasis is on preservation of germplasm and genetic enhancement using new molecular technologies. A brief description of developments with cacao, mango, and avocado are presented as examples of how these techniques can be used.

Technical Abstract: The plant genetics group at the SHRS is divided into three CRIS projects. All three are in the thematic National Program (NP) 301, Plant Microbial and Insect Genetic Resources, Genomics and Genetic Improvement. A major germplasm/breeding CRIS was established in 1998 for improving and preserving ornamental germplasm that has been highly successful. The other two CRIS projects involve germplasm maintenance, genetic enhancement and breeding of cacao and tropical fruit crops. A primary objective is in applying modern molecular technologies to accelerate conventional cultivar development.
