Technical Abstract: Rice is highly sensitive to low temperature particularly during the early stages of seedling establishment. In general, japonicas are more tolerant than most indicas. Given the biochemical complexity of adaptive responses to stress, the genotypic basis of differential low temperature sensitivity must rely on intricate mechanisms that integrate a plethora of molecular changes. Our previous analysis of candidate genes from a subtracted rice EST C dynamics and regulatory aspects of the early events leading to adaptive responses in a cold-tolerant model japonica cultivar. The significance of the upregulated component of the cold stress transcriptome is discussed.
