Technical Abstract: The Lane Agriculture Research Center is operated by Oklahoma State University and the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Located in southeastern Oklahoma, 13 resident scientists work cooperatively to develop production practices for organic vegetable production. One aspect of the program is weed control studies which focus on management of cover crops, the use of corn gluten meal as a preemergence herbicide and the testing of non-selective postemergence herbicides. In the area of cover crops we are researching the management of rye (Secale cereale) when planted prior to vegetables. Rye is grown during the winter months. Treatments used in the spring in preparation for vegetable planting include mowing of rye (M), M plus thorough tillage (T), M and T plus plastic mulch and M plus shallow tillage. In 2005, the effects of these treatments on yields of summer squash were found to vary with planting date. In another series of studies, corn gluten meal is being tested for preemergence weed control in summer squash. Rates, formulations, and application methods are evaluated for crop tolerance and annual weed control. An optimum application was found to be treatment of the bed surface except for a narrow band centered on the crop row. Organic approved, non-selective herbicides were evaluated for rate response, surfactants, and efficacy on selected weed species.
